Frequently Asked Questions (& Answers)

How do I know this will work for me?

Everyone is different and experience the benefit of counselling at different speeds. However, when you trust your counsellor, and the right techniques and approach are being used, you will likely begin to see improvement and the benefits of counselling. Feeling the results of therapy can take time for some and consistency can be the key to gaining therapeutic alliance with your counsellor, and insight into significant outcomes in your life.

How do I get started?

Start by reading each of our counsellor's bios here. From there, use the buttons in their profiles to email or book with them directly.

What happens during sessions?

When you arrive for your session, we will discuss the reason why you have come to counselling. Your counsellor will listen to you and ask you some background questions that will help us decide on setting some initial goals. Any subsequent sessions will be focused on working on those goals together. We will be discussing any feelings, behaviours and thoughts that continue to be problematic, and talk about ways to cope better, feel better and deal with problems more effectively over the long-term. Your goals will continue to be reviewed and changed as needed over time.

Is my session covered by insurance?

I'm concerned about others finding out I'm in counselling.

Your confidentiality is very important and not taken lightly by any means. Your counsellor is bound by an ethical code, which requires us to abide by strict practices and guidelines when it comes to your confidentiality. Your information will not be shared without your permission, except under uncommon and very particular circumstances. In your session, your counsellor will discuss with you more in-depth about confidentiality at SCC.

Do you offer online counselling as well as in-person counselling?

We do offer virtual counselling as well as in-person services! At this time, all our therapists offer counselling via Zoom. Get in touch to inquire more!

Do you offer counselling for kids and teens?

We are currently proud to offer counselling for all ages!

It is important for us to be fully transparent with you when it comes to all things relating to counselling. One consideration that is frequently top-of-mind for clients when coming to counselling is that of insurance. At this time, none of our therapists at SCC offer direct billing. The reason for this is primarily to ensure you are receiving the highest level of care. Direct billing often means that treatment is mandated and restricted in order to suit the insurance company's needs, not the client's. However, even though we do not direct bill, we do offer invoices post-payment that you can keep for your own records, or use to seek to pursue reimbursement from your insurance company.

Many insurance companies within Canada do recognize our education and designations, but some do not. This means that there is always a chance that your session at SCC will not be covered by your insurance. We always encourage clients to check their specific insurance coverage, as each individual's insurance is unique. We do not take responsibility for insurance coverage, and offer no guarantee that your session will be covered.
